Loughton-based Clear Architects has been shortlisted for the Structural Timber Awards in the ‘Best New Build’ category for its residential project 40 Hill Road in Theydon Bois, Essex.

Clear Architects, a RIBA-chartered practice based on the Essex borders, transformed a 1950s bungalow into a stunning modern three-storey home on the fringes of the Essex Green Belt.

The site topography crucially influenced the design concept to provide stunning views of London and the surrounding countryside.

Melanie Clear, director of RIBA-chartered Clear Architects, says:

“The project was incredibly challenging and transforming the bungalow plot to this   amazing new home was us at our creative best.  However, because of the views, the site almost guided us to the end design, we wanted to maximise the London skyline yet still address the street.  Hence the almost T shape form with an angled feature staircase winding its way up the 3 floors.

The Structural Timber Awards promote excellence in structural timber across the UK, with a mission to showcase innovation, celebrate best practice and recognise expertise in timber technology and the ways it contributes to an energy efficient and sustainable built environment, so I am delighted that the work of Clear Architects, is being recognised in this way.

I am thrilled that the project has been shortlisted and can’t wait to see the winners    unveiled.”

The winners will be announced at the Structural Timber Awards Dinner on 19th October 2016, in the company of business leaders and key decision makers within the construction industry.
