Three Redrow site managers received ‘Highly Commended’ awards at the NHBC’s annual Health and Safety Awards after each being awarded the ‘Commended’ status in May.

Darren Smith (Colindale Gardens, West London), Simon Longley (Langley Grange, Yorkshire and Stewart O’Brien (The Loftings, Southern Counties) are three of just 23 site managers across the country to be awarded the sought-after health and safety title.

Now in their tenth year, the awards are given to site managers who demonstrate an outstanding level of health and safety management from planning through to execution.

Darren Smith oversees the construction of Redrow’s flagship scheme in North London, Colindale Gardens. Once complete, Colindale Gardens will feature 2,900 new homes alongside shops, cafes and extensive public open space and will be Redrow’s largest scheme to date. This is the second time Darren Smith has received the ‘Highly Commended’ award for his work at Colindale Gardens, after picking up the title in 2017.

Stewart O’Brien, who last year received a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the NHBC, is now celebrating after being recognised for his commitment to health and safety at The Loftings in the centre of Maidenhead, while Simon Longley also took home a gong at the awards for his work at Langley Grange in Scissett, Yorkshire.

Redrow’s success at the awards follows the appointment of Darren Shattock as the housebuilder’s new Group Health, Safety & Environmental Director in July last year. With the safety of colleagues, customers and visitors a top priority for Redrow, Darren works closely with the company’s executive team, site managers and regional divisions to maintain and further build on Redrow’s positive safety culture and lead on the development and delivery of the health, safety and environment strategy across the group.

Darren Shattock, Group Health, Safety & Environmental Director at Redrow, said: “At Redrow, keeping our staff, contractors and visitors safe on our building sites is, and will continue to be, our highest priority. Our site managers and their respective teams are incredibly committed to ensuring they uphold the highest safety standards, as showcased by three of our site managers receiving the highly commended status by the NHBC.

“Each year Redrow delivers thousands of quality homes, positively impacting communities across England & Wales. Therefore creating and developing safe and well-informed teams, which are supported by robust on-site procedures, is vital. I am proud to see our site managers across our regions acting a positive role models and ambassadors for the company.”

Steve Wood, NHBC Chief Executive, said: “It’s been a fantastic year with a record number of entries; we had an outstanding shortlist of finalists this year, strengthening the importance given to health and safety on house-building sites across the UK.

“NHBC believes it is crucial to recognise and reward those house builders that demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement in preventing accidents and ill health not just onsite but the surrounding community it works in. This year’s winners demonstrated their commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record while keeping up with the growing demand for quality new homes. We offer them our congratulations.”

These awards are the only health and safety awards ceremony exclusively for the construction industry and recognise site managers who prioritise the health and wellbeing of their teams.
