Profab Access highlights importance of bi-directional testing for Fire Door Safety Week 2023

Profab Access, a leading manufacturer of riser doors and access panels for ceilings, walls and partitions, is raising awareness of the importance of third party bi-directional testing as part of Fire Door Safety Week 2023.

Latest research has revealed that bi-directional testing was ranked the second least important consideration from seven different criteria for professionals when specifying fire rated riser doors, which Profab Access believes is due to a lack of understanding of the type of testing and its importance for ensuring legal compliance.

Profab Access is therefore using Fire Door Safety Week, which is being held between the 25th and 29th September, as an opportunity to highlight the importance of ensuring both sides of a doorset have been fire tested by a certified third party to ensure the highest standards of compliance and fire safety throughout residential and commercial buildings.

By specifying riser doors that have undergone independent bi-directional fire testing, a clear audit trail of test evidence is provided that demonstrates the fire integrity of the door  and the limitation of the spread of fire, and transmission of radiant heat.

Due to the riser doors being physically tested in both directions, it proves the products’ ability to withstand exposure to fire and smoke from both directions, adequately preventing them from spreading throughout a multi-storey building via the riser shaft.

Marcus Parnham, Commercial Director at Profab Access, said: “As part of this year’s Fire Door Safety Week, we want to highlight the importance of ensuring the performance, compliance and certification of riser doors, and how this can only be achieved by specifying high quality riser doors that have been bi-directional tested by an accredited independent party.

“This type of testing provides professionals with the certainty that the riser doors will perform to the highest standards throughout their lifetime, and in turn, futureproofs the building by going above and beyond minimum levels of compliance  ensuring the long term safety of a building and its occupants.”
