For Everyday Life. (FEL), an international design studio and consulting agency, has created a captivating new retail environment for USM, the luxury, Swiss, modular manufacturer, in a brand new space located in the heart of London’s West End, Marylebone.
The move marks a shift in consumer experience, transitioning from a contract setting in Clerkenwell to a more retail-oriented, luxury environment in Marylebone to enhance the focus on the high-end residential sector. The new store has been designed as an immersive space that exudes the classic, timeless, and adaptable USM design.
Upon entering, the attention of the customer is immediately drawn to the structural glazed feature, which encases a new open staircase leading down to the lower ground floor. Situated above the striking feature is a bespoke, flat-plane light that creates the illusion of daylight, directing brightness down to open up the space. Together, these elements highlight the stairwell as the centre point of the store to amplify the sense of space.
As the customer circulates through the store, there is a change in both the floor level and material, which invites customers to explore as the journey continues downstairs. The central staircase seamlessly connects the two levels; crafted from wood, its light tone and soft texture complement the surrounding aesthetic. The staircase is configured to open up views of the store and product displays, while maximising daylight exposure for both staff and customers. Every element, from the softly illuminated plane to the integrated plinth and concealed storage, was designed to reflect how the USM system can evolve with its users.
In a clever nod to USM, FEL defined the zones and levels using a 350 x 350 mm Haller grid. This not only means the floor plan is a reflection of the USM product, but also creates a space that is easily adaptable, versatile and scalable so USM can easily change the store layout.
Mirko Müller, UK CEO, “The result speaks for itself; the store is undeniably beautiful. FEL’s deep understanding of the USM brand is clearly reflected in the design of this new showroom. The space thoughtfully captures the brand’s essence, resulting in a captivating, flexible environment.”
Colin Macgadie, Founding Director, For Everyday Life. commented, “FEL’s design approach was centred around the USM core values of modularity, adaptability and longevity, transforming the space into what we’ve referred to as a stage – a gallery-like platform for storytelling, where displays are flexible, dynamic and designed to invite interaction.”
