Civil Engineering & Construction: Structural Steel Failure

Water vapour permeability problems with barriers, coatings and claddings

When water gets into constructional steel structures it causes damage, corrosion, weakness and eventual failure.  Keeping liquid water out is relatively easy with a simple barrier – but just about impossible with water vapour as in this state it can permeate through any material.  Worse still, once through it condenses and is trapped there as a liquid.

There is no perfect solution – but with the right equipment you can usually optimise coatings, claddings and other materials to suit the lifespan of the structure – albeit a bridge tunnel, dam, skyscraper or simple building. And that’s where Versaperm comes in with its    Water Vapour Permeability Meter (WVTR).

HEAD TO THE BATHROOM WHEN PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Planning for the future involves more than ensuring finances are organised. What about a client’s home? Is that “future-proofed”?

As we get older, one of the main ‘activities’ people struggle with is using the bathroom, particularly the toilet.  Something that can be managed now becomes harder as manual dexterity, balance and mobility deteriorate. Indeed, the bathroom is the most frequent room to be altered under home adaptations, with the toilet being the most frequently addressed fixture.

Understanding soil type: the key to addressing structural problems

Cracking walls and uneven floors are usually symptoms of a deeper problem. Many structural issues are the result of unstable ground or subsidence, so understanding what’s happening in the ground will help to identify the cause of any structural issues that are happening to the building itself.  Different soil types in particular give rise to different problems and require different solutions.
