Maggie’s St Barts awarded Supreme Winner at Surface Design Awards 2019 @surfacethinking

The winners of the 2019 Surface Design Awards have been announced, hailing the best and most impressive use of materials in, and on, architectural projects from around the globe.

The beautiful new Maggie’s Centre Barts, London has been declared the Supreme Winner, capturing the judge’s hearts and minds. A beacon of design in the charity sector, the building by Steven Holl Architects’ was shortlisted in the Public Building Exterior category, gaining acclaim from the judges, including Christophe Egret, who stated “You really feel that a person dealing with cancer might feel elevated in this space”.

New timber design publication to launch at Futurebuild @TRADA_ @FuturebuildNow

A new publication focussing on collaboration in the design of innovative timber buildings is to be launched at Futurebuild this March.

‘Timber Design Pioneers’ is published by TRADA (Timber Research and Development Association) and supported by the timber industry’s campaign, Wood for Good. The launch will take place on Wood for Good’s stand at G50 on 6 March at 4.15pm and is a one-off opportunity to get a copy of the publication in print, while stocks last.

Start packing away items weeks in advance and get plenty of decent boxes to hand.

Carpet Recycling UK: landfill diversion of carpet waste rises @CarpetRecycleUK

The volume of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK has shown a modest increase with 175,252 tonnes reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2018, according to Carpet Recycling UK.

 

This represents a diversion rate of 44% – up from 42% and an increase of 7,252 tonnes on 2017, the not for profit membership association reports. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK.

Goldsmiths College of London gets a stairlift @invalifts

Goldsmiths College, a full School of the University of London, specialises in the study of creative, cultural and social subjects, and has been teaching students for over 200 years.

The College recently decided to add disabled access adaptations to the music wing of the building, and contacted the lift experts at Invalifts to get advice for the best solution.

PETERBOROUGH MAN WITH RARE TREMOR GETS BEAMED UP A LEVEL WITH ‘STAR TREK’ HOMELIFT @StiltzLifts

A man with a rare neurological condition which leaves him with extreme ‘shakiness’ in his legs has discovered how to remain in his two-storey home after becoming the first person to have a new state-of-the-art Stiltz Trio+ Homelift installed.

Peter Kilburn, 62, from Whittlesey in Peterborough, suffers from Primary Orthostatic Tremor and is unable to stand or walk for any length of time. There are only thought to be about 50 people in the UK with the condition, which is otherwise known as OT. There is no cause and currently, no cure.
