Their highly experienced team is meticulous about ensuring that the furniture and interiors they create, from exceptional bespoke kitchens, bathrooms, studies and staircases, to bars, libraries and dressing rooms, are personally relevant to their clients. So, when the owners of a six-bedroom Richmond home were looking to create a unique walk-in dressing room off the master suite, Mark Taylor Design created a show-stopping space.
Managing Director Mark Taylor explains: “The clients, an actor and her businessman husband, wanted a spacious, walk-in dressing room where all the clothes would be on display in an eye-catching, organised fashion. We worked in collaboration with their architect to ensure the room worked and reached its true potential.”
The dressing room, which measures 2.3m by 5m, overlooks the Grade 1 listed property’s beautiful walled garden and features a classically simple design that is in keeping with the 16th Century house – there are timbers dating back to the Tudor period – and allows the clothes within to take centre-stage.
Due to the building’s age, there were certain constraints that had to be overcome. “The floor, walls and ceiling in the dressing room were all irregular so we had to account for this in our design,” continues Mark. “And, because it is a Grade 1 listed property, everything had to be built away from the walls. We took great care to ensure that the furniture accentuated rather than hid the original features of the room such as the shuttered window and cornicing.”
The furniture, designed and beautifully crafted by Mark Taylor Design, is made from European oak, which provides a stunning, traditional finish. It was stained to match the existing floor and to complement two existing units that the clients wanted to incorporate into the design. The open rails ensured the clothes were easily accessible and could be hung properly.
The client says: “I’m still in awe of my dressing room – thinking of holding soirées in there! It looks amazing and I’m loving my clothes!”
A bespoke dressing room by Mark Taylor Design will cost from around £7,000.
