‘As editors we are sometimes overwhelmed by AI and digitally created content, so to be genuinely shortlisted as an Art Team — where the design was first and foremost conceived as a biophilic experience — is truly wonderful,” said Dr Vanessa Champion, founder and Editorial Director of the Journal of Biophilic Design.
“Having worked in marketing and communications I realised that media can make a difference”, continues Champion, “When coming up with the concept and layout for the journal, I did an initial layout of leaves on the page, tactile paper, beautiful spreads where you feel like you can smell and touch the plants. Mike Payne, our brilliant designer, has consistently taken this concept further — and every issue outstrips the last.”
“Being part of a publication that leads with design as a felt experience rather than a visual one has been a genuine privilege,” said Mike Payne, Designer, Journal of Biophilic Design. “Biophilic design deserves to be seen, and I hope this recognition helps more people discover it.

Biophilic design, incorporating natural elements to enhance human connection with nature, is gaining ever-growing momentum in architecture and interior design, with continued research demonstrating its positive impacts on wellbeing, productivity and environmental sustainability. The Journal proactively pushes this concept forward, helping to make our built environment a happier, healthier and better place to live, wherever you are.
