Discover the latest architectural lighting designs at Light School
Light School will be hosted within Surface Design Show 2017 at the Business Design Centre in London from 7-9 February.
For over 10 years Surface Design Show has been the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces, connecting innovative and exciting materials with a specifying audience of architects and designers. Light is a vital partner to surface design, changing interior & exterior surfaces dramatically – Light School attendees will discover the best of new lighting design and learn about the important partnership between surface and light.
Now in its fourth year Light School presented by The Light Collective and supported by the Institute of Lighting Professionals consists of three parts: Light Talks, Product School and the School Newspaper.
The School Room
The School Room hosts Light Talks sponsored by Luctra; 2½ days of lessons and hands-on demos with top UK lighting designers taking on the role of lecturers. The programme of talks provides the audience with access to the UK’s leading lighting designers, many of whom are returning for the second or third year. This year’s speakers will include David Atkinson of David Atkinson Lighting Design, Sanjit Bahra of Design Plus Light, Ellie Coombs of Nulty, Rebecca Weir of Light IQ and Sally Storey of Lighting Design International. The auditorium will feature the award winning Flex by Luctra, which is a cordless and portable lamp designed to enhance wellbeing and productivity by harnessing the biological effect of light.
Product School
Product School is the home of architectural lighting and provides architects and designers with a comprehensive review of lighting innovation and technology. Visitors can touch, compare and learn about innovative lighting products from exhibitors including Spectral, Applelec, Optelma, Baro, Wila, Evans Turner, Visive, Selux and Lumiscopic. One new product introduced for Light School will be a range of illuminated surfaces from Lumiscopic featuring their trademark dichoric materials which appear to change colour depending on the viewing angle. Whilst Baro will be showcasing their recently developed LED hybrid technology; a special 3D silicone lens on the LED module which ensures that less light is directly emitted and more light reaches the target surface in a controlled manner via the reflector facets.
In 2016 British lighting company Factorylux launched a new range of Xicato powered architectural spotlights, pendants, wall lights and lighting track. During Surface Design Show Factorylux will be hosting a series of lighting workshops where attendees make, test and certify a complete luminaire to BS EN 60598. Workshops are in #TheVan a purpose built mobile workspace which has just completed a hugely successful Trans-Europe Express Tour. The van will be situated at the entrance to the Business Design Centre and the 1 hour workshops will take place during the opening times of the event.
School Newspaper
Every school has a newspaper and of course Light School is no exception. The Light School Newspaper, sponsored by Xicato, is a free newspaper sent out to 70,000 architects, designers and specifiers. Plus every attendee gets a free copy to take away at the end of the ‘school day’. The newspaper contains articles on Lighting Design, Product School and interviews from Light Talks lecturers.
Light School ensures that the audience leaves the show having learnt something that will change the way they see light.
