Grand Designs Live Partners with NaCSBA for National Custom and Self Build Week, to Spark Creativity and Education in the Self-Build Sector
Grand Designs Live, along with The National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA) are pleased to announce the return of National Custom and Self Build Week 2019 from the 6-12 May. Throughout the week Grand Designs Live will host a series of events celebrating and promoting Custom and Self Build as a route to building a dream home.
Brand new self-build focused TV show, Grand Designs – The Street, will air from 4 April 2019, over six weeks, culminating in National Custom & Self Build Week. The show follows Self Builders on a single street at the UK’s largest Self Build site – Graven Hill.
National Custom and Self Build Week, will link with Grand Designs Live, to see a variety of talks, headed up by Kevin McCloud, featuring Self Builders from Grand Designs: The Street and experts from Graven Hill, as well as one to one expert advice sessions focusing on Self-Build taking place throughout the show on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’.
The questions and processes surrounding self build are widely misunderstood, and NaCSBA, along with Grand Designs Live are hoping to dispel some of the most commonly believed myths including around:
- Cost and Risk
- Length of Process
- Plots of Land
- Mortgages
- Planning Permission
Each weekday at Grand Designs Live, the show will have a NaCSBA member on stage presenting: Busting the Myths – Self Build is Easy. The show also launches the Self-Build Clinic to give visitors the opportunity to speak to members of the National Custom & Self Build Association (NaCSBA) about their upcoming home projects. Located within the popular Ask an Expert area of the show, this unique element offers visitors the opportunity to ask quick questions and discuss project plans, without having to make a one-to-one appointment. Visitors can learn about the processes and preparations required for self-build success and see that with the right advice, and careful forward planning, it is perfectly possible to stick to a budget, and realise a dream home.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to see a live build in action; as Grand Designs Live create a home using the U-Build concept developed by Studio Bark, with help from Structure Workshop and Cut and Construct. As featured in Grand Designs: The Street, the U-Build system is a revolution in construction, providing a robust and affordable self-build solution, which can be assembled by a small team. The Studio Bark structure is designed to showcase the benefits of self-build. Studio Bark, together with Kevin McCloud and the visitors, will continue making and adding further modular U-Build components onto the stand each day to demonstrate its flexibility and functionality.
National Custom & Self Build Week has the simple objective of getting more people to think about Self or Custom Building – visitors can start by joining the 40,000* people already signed up to their local Right to Build registers. Visit the Right to Build Portal at www.righttobuildportal.org.
The week is also an opportunity for people to learn more about the different routes to home ownership, such as Custom Building, different construction options and where to go for help and advice.
