Dekton Combines Style and Safety in the Local Blackfriars Launderette, Manchester @CosentinoUK

The ultra-compact surface, Dekton® by Cosentino has once again proven its versatility and desirability in a commercial setting with its specification for the stylish launderette in the recently completed luxury Local Blackfriars development in the heart of Manchester, UK.  Local Blackfriars is a gated community comprising 380 apartments, townhouses and penthouses across two striking towers.  These are architecturally blended into a Grade II-listed former public house – the Black Friar – which has been repurposed as a gateway entrance.

The development includes a full range of amenities for residents, including 24/7 concierge service, bistro, bar, gym, yoga and dance studio, cinema room and a fully equipped launderette.  Given the nature of a launderette, it was of paramount importance to the team at Jon Matthews Architects when specifying the design that the chosen flooring gave a minimum slip resistance rating of 45 when wet, to ensure safety for the residents. It was also key that the interior design of the space matched the same high standards throughout the wider development, and in particular the team desired a modern, polished concrete finish for the flooring.

Cosentino’s latest flooring product, Dekton® Grip+ provided the perfect solution, chosen in the colour Kreta from the Industrial Collection; a concrete-look grey design with realistic details.  With a minimum slip resistance rating of 49 in the wet, exceeding the architects’ requirements, Grip+ is an advanced, innovative treatment that guarantees slip resistance on Dekton® ultra-compact surfaces.  This ensures maximum safety when used for flooring.  Dekton® Grip+ meets the most restrictive international regulations, classifying as R11 under regulation DIN 51130, whilst also meeting the Class 3 regulation.

Furthermore, Grip+ is joined to the material before the particle sintering process involved in the manufacturing of Dekton®, therefore making it part of the surface’s molecular structure.  This ensures it cannot be worn down over time, which is ideal for use in high-traffic, commercial projects such as the Local Blackfriars Launderette.  The lightly textured surface is consistent, uniform and pleasant to the touch, whilst also being easy to maintain.

These robust safety standards are matched by Dekton®’s excellent technical benefits, which include a high resistance to scratches and stains, ensuring easy cleaning.   The slabs can also be manufactured in large format to custom sizes, offering a greater level of precision for architects and designers.

Matching 12mm Dekton® Kreta was also specified for the Launderette’s worksurfaces and splashbacks, providing a cohesive look to the design which met the architects’ vision, whilst also providing the same hardwearing, low maintenance benefits.  Sleek black laundry appliances complete the look, matched by crisp white walls and natural wood architectural elements, giving the space a relaxed, Scandi vibe.
