New Award for Architectural Photography announced for next year
Entries are now open for the prestigious Surface Design Awards which celebrate the most impressive and sustainable use of surface materials in, and on, architectural projects from around the world.
The last edition attracted 107 entries spanning 15 different countries including India, Egypt, Italy, China, San Marino, Oman, and the USA.
The Supreme Winner of the 2021 Surface Design Awards went, for the second year running to a project both designed and located in India. Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Center in Pune, India was designed by IMK Architects. The client was Symbiosis Society, Pune.
Double category winners in 2021 were: ACME’s Bumpers Oast for the Housing Category and, in the Light + Surface Category, Maggie’s, Leeds designed by Heatherwick Studio with lighting designer Light Bureau.
The 2022 Awards include a new category: The Architectural Photography Award will embrace photography focusing on architecture and interior design including exterior or interior images. Both amateurs and professional photographers are invited to enter this Award.
Other categories for 2022 are: Commercial Building (Interior and Exterior), Housing (Interior and Exterior), Landscape + Public Realm, Light & Surface (Interior and Exterior), Public Building (Interior and Exterior) and Temporary Structure. Sustainability will again be a leading criteria for every entry and applicants must produce a statement and calculation for the carbon footprint of the cladding/materials used.
The 2022 judging panel of industry experts is Co-Chaired by Basha-Franklin’s Creative Director, Nicola Osborn and Joseph Henry, Principal Project Officer in the Greater London Authority’s Regeneration Team. The judges are Rosie Gibbs-Stevenson, Curator of Public Programmes at The Architecture Foundation, Jonathan Hagos, Director of Freehaus, Rosie Haslem from Streetsense, Giles Miller from Giles Miller Studio, Alex Morgan, Founding Partner of Morgan Capital, Sumitra Upham, Senior Curator of Public Programmes at The Design Museum and Sam Williams, Commercial Development Manager at Argent LLP.
After entries close, the Judges will work in two teams selecting a shortlist and winner for each of the categories. They then join forces to pick the Supreme Winner, the best of the best.
The Awards Presentation ceremony will be on Thursday 10 February 2022 as part of the annual Surface Design Show, the industry’s leading event for architects and designers taking place in London’s Business Design Centre from 8-10 February 2022.
Projects can be submitted by the client, architect or designer, surface supplier or their representatives.
